Becoming An educator

During my career,  some things have completely surprised me, and one of those was my passion for teaching.  Until I entered my first classroom at Selkirk College,  I had no idea that education was going to be such a pivotal part of my career and how I define myself.  However,  from the moment I stepped in front of those first students I have loved every minute of my time spent in education.  To me, education is not about imparting content.  Google and excel have taken over that domain.  Education is about being able to offer insight on a topic.  It is about being able to critically analyze,  make decisions, problem solve.  In a world of AI,  I ask myself every day what I taught my students that a robot can't do.  That is present day education and it is thrilling to be a part of.

Case Based learning

I am passionate about case based learning,  and am experienced writing cases,  searching out appropriate cases for learning objectives, and teaching case writing and case presenting.  I believe cases allow us to see patterns in analysis and map out connective properties.  By immersing students into a narrative and a problem rich in context, a case allows the student to develop a deeper connection to a subject matter.

I once heard that when we read a story,  our brains are active in many regions.  I believe that creating neural connectivity through case based learning truly grows the student's brain.

  • CFE tutoring

Proffessional Development

Ability to learn and adapt has always been a pillar in the CPA profession,  and professional development is part of this.  I am the West Kootenay CPA Chapter board PD director and find it very exciting to dig deep into the learning needs of CPAs in the field.

In the future (that is now!) we must all be dedicated life long learners.  We must all seek to learn how to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.  The question is not "am I qualified for this?"  it is "how do I become qualified for this?"

Things I could do for you:

  •  Deliver your content as a PD instructor

  •  Design custom PD for your team

  •  Connect you with the presenter you need

  •  Create or help with long-term in house education planning
